Match the reference and canvas ratios first
The reference crop and the canvas must share the same aspect ratio. If they do not, equal grid cells cannot map cleanly from one surface to the other. Crop the reference to the canvas ratio before deciding how many rows and columns to use.
Choose a grid that is coarse enough to remain readable. Four to eight divisions along the longer edge are often sufficient for major placement. Add more only when the subject contains precise architecture or tightly measured features.
Measure relationships inside each cell
Do not draw the cell as an isolated picture. Notice where an edge enters and leaves the cell, its angle relative to the grid lines, and its distance from nearby intersections. Continue important contours across cell boundaries so the larger gesture remains coherent.
Mark a few structural landmarks first: the top, bottom, widest point, center of interest, and major directional changes. Connect those landmarks lightly before describing smaller shapes.

Check diagonals to catch accumulated error
Small errors can compound as you move from cell to cell. Diagonals provide an independent check. Compare the angle between important landmarks and see whether it intersects the same grid points in the reference and on the canvas.
Step back frequently. The grid is accurate locally, but the drawing must still work globally. If the silhouette or gesture feels wrong from a distance, recheck the large relationships before adding detail.
Remove the scaffolding
Once the main drawing is secure, soften or erase unnecessary grid lines. Restate the important contours with attention to rhythm and edge variety. This prevents the construction method from controlling the final character of the work.
